Resistance to chemicals

Chemical properties

Ⅰ. Chemical resistance

TORAYPEF™ exhibits superb chemical resistance because it is made from polyolefin and because it has a molecular structure that is cross-linked by means of an electron beam. Table 1 shows the results of chemical resistance tests. TORAYPEF™ swells some when exposed to carbon tetrachloride, toluene, and heptane. Otherwise, TORAYPEF™ is not attacked by most other chemicals. That said, TORAYPEF™ does partially dissolve in heated aromatic hydrocarbons.

Ⅱ. Weatherability

Abbildung 1 shows the results for TORAYPEF™ from outdoor exposure tests. TORAYPEF™ holds up for about 8 months to 1 year. After that, the surface layer degrades conspicuously. The same tests were run simultaneously using other plastic foams. Soft urethane foam degraded completely after 1-3 months. Polystyrene foam saw its surface layer degrade conspicuously after 3 months; after 8 months, its thickness had reduced to half. Soft PVC foam underwent substantial shrinkage. Accelerated weatherability testing performed on TORAYPEF™ using a weather tester found that after 1,500 to 2,000 hours the surface layer became brittle and cracked, showing conspicuous degradation; but that was the extent of the effects. However, the PP grade has slightly lower resistance to weather and is not suited for standalone use outdoors. Covering with a PVC sheet or some other weather-resistant skin resolves that issue.
