TORAYPEF™ Polyolefin Form
Polyolefin (polyethylene / polypropylene) based foam material with excellent cushioning,
shock-absorbing, heat-insulating, water-resistant, and chemical properties
TORAYPEF™ is a radiation-cross-linked* polyolefin foam. It's light weight, heat-insulating, shock-absorbing, highly moldable, and nonwater-absorbency properties make it ideal for a wide range of applications: molded interior automotive parts, insulation materials for construction uses, joint filler, pipe covers, and other industrial materials as well as daily necessities, health and sports equipment. *Cross-linking: A chemical reaction in which raw material polymers are linked together, changing their chemical and physical properties.
Features
Cushioning properties
Highly flexible and resilient, with excellent shock energy absorption.
Shock-absorbing properties
Suitable for cushioning materials due to its semi-rigid and elastic characteristics.
Heat insulation
Extremely low thermal conductivity, water absorption rate, and moisture permeability, making it suitable for heat, warmth, and cold insulation materials.
Waterproof and Buoyancy
Because of its structure containing a large number of closed cells, water absorption does not occur, exhibiting high waterproof properties and buoyancy.
Chemical Resistance
Compared to other plastic foams, it is hardly affected by chemicals and medicines.
Processability
Easy to process such as cutting, slicing, molding, and bonding. It is also compatible with surface processing such as embossing.
Moldability
Because TORAYPEF™ is a cross-linked closed-cell foam, it can be vacuum molded and pressure molded using a general molding machine as it is.
Secondary Processability
Punching, adhesive processing, etc. are possible according to your requests at affiliated TORAYPEF™ processing companies.

Dimensional stability, good moldability, and high tactile sensation through proprietary technology
TORAYPEF™ Polyolefin Form exhibits excellent dimensional stability and moldability, especially in wide products, thanks to Toray's proprietary salt foaming method. In response to market needs, we have also launched grades of soft foam (Torasoft™) that contribute to improving aesthetics and adding a premium feel.
Stable quality of molded products through the "salt foaming method"

Benefits of the salt foaming method
Softening of foam (Comparison with existing PP foam)
By adding elastomers, 25% compressive hardness is improved by about 40% compared to existing PP foam. Achieves high tactile sensation while securing moldability.
Achieving both high tactile sensation and easy deployment of airbag
TORAYPEF™ Polyolefin Form also has a lineup of foams for score-less airbags (Torasoft™). In this grade, a proprietary formulation improves the adhesive strength with the TPO skin, achieving both increased airbag deployment speed and suppression of peeling during deployment.
Improvement of airbag deployment (Comparison with existing PP foam)
High processability making cutting and punching easy
TORAYPEF™ Polyolefin Form is an excellent material that can accommodate a variety of applications due to its high processability. Cutting, slicing, thermal welding, vacuum molding, and pressure processing are possible, and complex shapes and precise processing can be easily performed. Furthermore, surface processing such as embossing, flocking, and various types of printing are also possible, allowing for a high degree of design freedom and increasing the added value of the product.
Examples of possible processing
| Processing method | Overview |
|---|---|
| Cutting |

TORAYPEF™ Polyolefin Form is used in various applications such as skins of automotive interior components, battery packs, and insulation materials for residential roofs.
Automotive interior components (Instrument panels, etc.)
In the automotive industry, as interior aesthetics improve, the need for high tactile sensation of interior components is increasing. TORAYPEF™ has a large lineup of soft foams that meet the needs for high tactile sensation, and grades that also achieve easy deployment of airbag are available, leading to expanding adoption globally.
Housing materials (Roof insulation, etc.)
Foams are also used as insulation materials for folded-plate roofs and housing equipment. In recent years, thick products with a high expansion ratio have been demanded from the perspective of improving insulation performance. TORAYPEF™ also offers high expansion ratio products for these applications. We can also accommodate processing into welded products, sliced products, etc. according to customer needs.
