Water Resistance of TORELINA™

Ⅰ. Water Absorption Properties

Because of its high crystallinity and its chemical structure, having very little affinity for water, the PPS polymer exhibits very little water absorption. Linear PPS grades (such as A604) exhibit lower degrees of water absorption than cross-linked PPS grades (such as A504X90). (Fig. 8.10)

Ⅱ. Hot Water Resistance (Temperature Dependence)

TORELINA™ exhibits a very low water absorption ratio, but tends to increase in terms of the saturated water absorption ratio near the glass transition temperature. (Table. 8.5) With increases in the water absorption ratio, the mechanical strength tends to decrease, but when the water absorption ratio approaches saturation, the mechanical strength enters a state of equilibrium. Given this fact, decreases in the mechanical strength of TORELINA™ A504X90 due to hot water treatment are assumed to be a result of the plasticizer-like effect of water absorption.
