Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP)
Widely used in automotive components, drone components, sporting goods, etc.

TORAYCA™ CFRTP is a material in which various base resins suited for applications are reinforced with carbon fiber (PP resin, PC resin, ABS resin, Nylon 6 resin, Nylon 66 resin, Nylon 610 resin, PBT resin, and PPS resin). It is lightweight and features excellent strength, stiffness, dimensional accuracy, and sliding properties, and is used in industrial applications such as automotives and electrical appliances, as well as in the sports field such as golf shafts and fishing gear components.

Features

Lightweighting

It has high specific strength and specific modulus, and a low specific gravity making it lightweight.

Creep Resistance and Fatigue Resistance

Because a variety of commonly distributed resins can be used, we also have a lineup with excellent creep and fatigue resistance.

Abrasion Resistance and Sliding Properties

Due to low abrasion loss and little damage to mating metals, its application to gear sliding components is expanding.

Low Coefficient of Linear Expansion and
Low Mold Shrinkage Rate

Due to low shrinkage and a low coefficient of linear expansion, high dimensional accuracy is realized.

EMI Shielding Properties

Because carbon fiber itself has EMI shielding properties, long-fiber resins in particular have excellent electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding properties, and do not require plating.

Electrical Conductivity and Antistatic Properties

Because it is compounded with carbon fiber, it has a low surface resistivity and a rich track record of adoption in antistatic applications.

High Strength and Impact Resistance

Because the manufacturing method for long-fiber resin production is unique to Toray, various base resins can be used, realizing high strength and high impact resistance.

Good Moldability

Molding is possible with general-purpose molds and molding machines.

Reasons to Choose

An extensive lineup that flexibly responds to customer challenges

A major feature of TORAYCA™ CFRTP is its wide lineup, as it can adopt various commonly distributed resins. In addition, the properties differ depending on the residual fiber length of the compounded carbon fiber (short fiber or long fiber), allowing you to choose the optimal grade according to your required characteristics.
Long-fiber pellets exhibit high electromagnetic shielding properties, as well as high strength, impact resistance, and low warpage. Short-fiber pellets excel in moldability and realize high aesthetics.

Electromagnetic shielding properties suitable for metal replacement (Long-fiber pellets)

In recent years, lightweighting of electronic devices and automotive components has been required, and long-fiber pellets are attracting attention as an alternative material to metals. Long-fiber pellets in particular exhibit high electromagnetic shielding properties, and their performance can be adjusted by increasing the carbon fiber content or by the type of resin.
Leveraging this characteristic, studies are progressing as an alternative material with lightweight and high shielding performance in applications such as electronic device housings, automotive ECU cases, and battery covers. Further performance enhancement is expected in the future, and it is expanding as an option for metal replacement.

Low coefficient of linear expansion and mold shrinkage rate that maintain the dimensional accuracy of molded products (Long-fiber pellets)

Long-fiber pellets also feature lower anisotropy due to the entanglement of fibers during injection molding. Therefore, there is no unevenness in the strength of molded products. Furthermore, the coefficient of linear expansion and mold shrinkage rate are also low, contributing to the improvement of dimensional accuracy of components.

Further improvement of impact resistance by combining microstructure control (NANOALLOY) technology and TORAYCA™ CFRTP (long fiber)

We are also advancing research on "NANOALLOY TLP," which improves the properties of the base resin by applying Toray's proprietary "NANOALLOY®" technology.
"NANOALLOY®" technology is a technology that improves the properties of resins and other materials by dispersing multiple polymers in nanometers within nylon resin.
By fusing Toray's proprietary long-fiber pellet technology with "NANOALLOY®" technology, extremely excellent impact resistance as a carbon fiber reinforced injection molding material can be realized while maintaining high strength and high rigidity.

Applications

TORAYCA™ CFRTP is expanding its adoption not only in sporting goods, which are often reinforced with carbon fiber, but also in various sliding components.

Sporting Goods (Fishing Reels)

TORAYCA™ resin, which can use various resins and realizes high strength and good abrasion resistance, is also widely used in sporting goods.
As an example, a field where adoption has been expanding in recent years is fishing reels. TORAYCA™ resin, which combines lightweight and high rigidity, and also excels in corrosion resistance, is especially suitable for sea fishing equipment, realizing fatigue reduction and high durability. Furthermore, because it can accommodate complex shapes, functionality can be enhanced without compromising aesthetics.

Sliding Components (Creep countermeasures against high temperature and high-speed rotation)

In BEVs and machine tools, the acceleration of motors is said to be a future trend. Therefore, bearings require performance enhancement. Since the occurrence of the creep phenomenon* due to high-speed rotation at high temperatures is a particular challenge, improving the function of bearing retainers to prevent this is indispensable.
Therefore, we developed a TORAYCA™ resin grade based on low water absorption and heat-resistant nylon. As a result, bearing retainers that achieve both room-temperature toughness and high-temperature creep resistance have been realized. This grade is also suitable as an alternative material for metal gears, which are becoming smaller and higher in output.
*Creep phenomenon: A phenomenon in bearings where the outer ring of the bearing rotates and shifts in the circumferential direction.
