EMC countermeasures using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (CFRTP)
with excellent electromagnetic shielding properties
Mobility xEV Downsizing Space saving Power equipment Insulation measures
Against the background of an increase in electronic devices emitting electromagnetic waves and the spread of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) devices in the mobility field, the importance of countermeasures against device malfunctions caused by electromagnetic waves (EMC countermeasures) is increasing. By combining our proprietary polymer technology and carbon fiber technology, we propose Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (CFRTP) that achieves both high electromagnetic shielding properties and light weight.

The importance of electromagnetic shielding countermeasures for mobility is expanding year by year
Many electronic devices installed in mobility, including in-vehicle LANs, emit electromagnetic waves. In
this situation, not only are the devices inside the vehicle mutually affected by electromagnetic waves, but
they are also susceptible to the influence of electromagnetic waves emitted from outside the vehicle, which
can lead to malfunctions. Of course, electromagnetic waves emitted from electronic devices inside the
vehicle may also affect other devices outside the vehicle. To minimize these impacts, the importance of
EMC* countermeasures that appropriately shield electromagnetic waves is expanding year by
year.
In designs incorporating EMC countermeasures (EMC design), it is necessary to identify the sources of
electromagnetic waves inside the device and the parts susceptible to the influence of electromagnetic waves,
and to appropriately shield the electromagnetic waves with covers, etc. Indispensable for such
countermeasures are shielding materials with high electromagnetic shielding performance. In addition,
because the frequency bands used differ for each device, it is also important to be able to block a wide
range of frequency bands.
*EMC:Electromagnetic EMC: Electromagnetic Compatibility. The capability to function satisfactorily with sufficient countermeasures taken against both the electromagnetic waves emitted by a certain electronic device interfering with the operation of other devices, and conversely, the electronic device being affected by electromagnetic waves emitted from the outside.
Impacts of electromagnetic waves in mobility
Providing Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (CFRTP) optimal for EMC countermeasures
Millimeter wave radars and 5G devices, which are becoming increasingly popular in recent years, generally
use the 20 to 90 gigahertz frequency bands. We develop and provide Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic
(CFRTP) "TORAYCA™" that exhibits high electromagnetic shielding performance in these frequency bands.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic (CFRTP) based on resins is characterized by having high strength while
being light weight, making it suitable as a material for mobility where both light weight and safety are
required. Not only is TORAYCA™ light weight and excellent in abrasion resistance, but it also exhibits
excellent electromagnetic shielding performance equal to or better than PBT plated products in each
frequency band. It is also capable of handling low frequencies of 100 to 1000 megahertz.

In addition, we have a lineup of two types of pellets with different carbon fiber lengths (long fiber and short fiber), which can be used properly depending on the application. Long fiber pellets excel in strength, impact resistance, dimensional accuracy, and conductivity, while short fiber pellets excel in moldability.
Product Lineup
TORAYCA™ Short Fiber CF Reinforced
Among TORAYCA™ resins, which excel in mechanical strength and rigidity while being light weight and exhibit high electromagnetic shielding performance, we offer a lineup of pellets with short carbon fiber lengths (short fiber pellets). This product has better moldability compared to long fiber pellets, and is optimal for sports applications such as fishing gear components and bicycle components where appearance is required; mobility sliding parts where high strength and low friction are required; home appliance applications where high rigidity is required (examples of applications where the characteristics of short fiber pellets can be utilized); and antistatic applications requiring static electricity prevention such as semiconductor and electronic component transport.
Applications
- ・Fishing reels
- ・Bicycle components
- ・Mobility components
- ・Drone components
- ・Home appliances (Air conditioner components, etc.)
- ・ATM and change dispenser components
TORAYCA™ Long Fiber CF Reinforced
This is a long fiber pellet of TORAYCA™. While maintaining the light weight, fatigue resistance, and electromagnetic shielding performance that are the features of the entire product, it particularly excels in strength, impact resistance, dimensional accuracy, and conductivity. Long fiber pellets are suitable for exterior components for sports applications, etc. that are required to withstand strong external impacts, as well as PC housings, mobility millimeter wave radars, and inverter cases that require light weight, thin-walling, and electromagnetic shielding properties.
Applications
- ・Cameras, PC housings
- ・Fishing gear components
- ・Bicycle components
- ・Mobility components (Millimeter wave radar cases, inverter cases, etc.)
- ・Large electronic component cases
- ・Home appliances
